The sanctioning of Rs.1, 81, 75,000 by the Union Ministry of Culture has given a new direction to the conservation of heritage and historical monuments in the state of Goa. The amount is passed in order to protect 13 heritages including temples, churches, mosques and forts during the years of 2013-14. Seven monuments and churches in Old Goa along with Curdi in Sanguem, rock cut caves of Arvalem, the Mahadev temples in Tambdi Surla and Safa Masjid in Ponda are some of the structures chosen for restoration.
Chandresh Kumari Katoch, the Union minister of culture has informed MP Shantaram Naik replied in the Rajya Sabha about this allocation of Rs. 1.81 crore. Further, the minister said that a sum of 82 lakh has been allocated for conservation of for Basilica of Bom Jesus, 8 lakh for Convent of St Francis of Assisi church, 2.5 lakh for St Augustine’s church and St Catherine’s chapel, 6.5 lakh for St Cajetan’s church, 19 lakh for Se Cathedral and 2 lakh for Our Lady of Rosary church in Goa.
For conserving the Goa heritage of the upper fort in Aguada, an amount of 23.75 lakh has been allocated while the lower fort of Aguada has been allocated 25 lakh. The minister further informed that conserving the Goa heritage of monuments is a regular process, while special repair tasks will be implemented at selected monuments only.
